Systems Software Engineer IITechnovative Applications
Job Summary
Our radar systems depend on reliable software that controls embedded real-time computers, performs signal and data processing, supports operator interfaces, and converts complex sensor data into useful information. The Systems Software Engineer II will independently design, build, integrate, and verify assigned software capabilities alongside systems, electrical, mechanical, test, and manufacturing professionals. This mid-level role combines hands-on development with responsibility for technical execution, peer review, and coordination of defined work packages.
This position may require access to export-controlled information and eligibility for a U.S. Government security clearance. Employment is contingent upon satisfying all applicable eligibility and security requirements. Occasional travel may be required for customer meetings, integration, test, or field activities.
Responsibilities
• Design, develop, integrate, and test software for radar and related defense systems.
• Develop software for embedded real-time control, signal processing, data processing, graphical user interfaces, and near-real-time data reduction.
• Translate system and software requirements into maintainable architectures, detailed designs, code, tests, and technical documentation.
• Own defined software features or work packages from requirements clarification through design, implementation, integration, verification, and release.
• Develop and optimize C and C++ software in Linux and Windows environments; contribute in C#, Java, or Python where appropriate.
• Implement multi-threaded and parallel processing solutions with attention to timing, concurrency, memory use, reliability, and performance.
• Develop or support Linux device drivers and interfaces to hardware, sensors, communications links, and laboratory equipment.
• Design and implement algorithms involving sensor data, signal processing, control, tracking, or data reduction in collaboration with subject-matter experts.
• Perform unit, integration, regression, and system-level testing; investigate defects and resolve issues through disciplined root-cause analysis.
• Participate in design reviews, code reviews, configuration management, release activities, and technical planning throughout the software development life cycle.
• Review peer designs and code for correctness, maintainability, performance, security, and compliance with project standards.
• Estimate assigned work, identify dependencies, track technical progress, and communicate schedule or performance risks before they affect program commitments.
• Coordinate integration activities across software, systems, hardware, and test teams and provide technical direction within assigned work scope.
• Provide practical guidance to less-experienced engineers and share reusable methods, lessons learned, and technical knowledge.
• Support laboratory integration, qualification testing, customer demonstrations, and occasional field-test activities.
• Communicate technical status, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to cross-functional team members and leadership.
Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related technical discipline.
· Typically three to seven years of professional software-development experience in a complex engineering or product environment; equivalent demonstrated capability may be considered.
· Strong proficiency in C and C++, including debugging, object-oriented design, data structures, and development of reliable production code.
· Experience developing in Linux and Windows environments using standard build, debugging, source-control, and issue-tracking tools.
· Experience with multi-threaded software, concurrency, interprocess communication, and performance analysis.
· Working knowledge of the software development life cycle, requirements traceability, design documentation, configuration management, and verification.
· Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and test algorithms and to apply mathematics to engineering problems.
· Ability to work effectively with systems, hardware, test, and other engineering disciplines.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound engineering judgment, and disciplined problem-solving ability.
· U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense Secret security clearance.
Requirements
- Experience developing software for radar, electronic warfare, communications, sensors, avionics, fire-control, or other real-time defense systems.
- Experience with radar signal processing, detection, tracking, estimation, control, or near-real-time data-reduction algorithms.
- Experience developing Linux device drivers or other low-level hardware interfaces.
- Experience with C#, Java, and Python and with desktop or operator-facing graphical user interfaces.
- Experience with real-time or embedded operating systems, hardware-in-the-loop testing, network protocols, or serial communications.
- Experience with software architecture, automated testing, continuous integration, static analysis, code-quality tools, or model-based development.
- Knowledge of secure software-development practices, cybersecurity principles, or requirements applicable to defense systems.
Nice to Have
- Active U.S. Department of Defense Secret security clearance
About Us
Technovative Applications is a U.S. defense contractor in Brea, California. We develop and produce radar interferometers, radar subsystems, fire-control systems, and miniaturized communications transceivers for U.S. military applications. Our teams work across the product lifecycle, from early concepts and architecture through implementation, integration, test, and field demonstration.
Role Authority
· Make day-to-day technical decisions within assigned requirements, approved architecture, project plans, engineering standards, and configuration-control processes.
· Recommend design approaches, technical tradeoffs, development tools, estimates, and corrective actions for assigned work.
· Approve peer code changes or technical work products when formally assigned as a reviewer and when all project review criteria are satisfied.
· Coordinate task-level work and provide technical direction to contributors assigned to the same feature, work package, or integration activity.
· Pause an assigned build, integration, or test activity when a credible safety, security, quality, configuration, or equipment risk is identified, and promptly escalate the issue to the responsible lead.
· Escalate decisions that change approved requirements, system architecture, program cost or schedule commitments, customer obligations, or controlled baselines.
· This role does not carry independent personnel, compensation, budget, purchasing, contractual, or final program-approval authority unless separately delegated in writing.
What Success Looks Like
· Produces reliable, maintainable software that meets documented requirements and performs as intended in the integrated system.
· Identifies technical risks early, communicates them directly, and drives issues to resolution with the appropriate disciplines.
· Contributes clear designs, reviews, tests, and documentation that strengthen execution across the software lifecycle.
· Builds trust through technical rigor, follow-through, collaboration, and ownership of results.
