Job Summary

Ohio.News is seeking a motivated reporter to cover state politics and public policy. We are looking for a candidate with strong writing and research skills, an understanding of how government works (and often doesn’t) and a willingness to ask tough questions of those in power.

We aren’t looking to replicate the coverage readers can read in mainstream news organizations. We provide a distinctive view of state news by pursuing the stories, questions and consequences that matter to real Ohioans. If other outlets aren’t asking an important question, pursuing an interesting angle or digging deeper into an issue, we will.

The reporter will cover statewide political issues while developing original coverage that advances stories rather than simply repeating what has already been reported. The successful candidate should be comfortable handling breaking news while also developing sources, examining primary documents and pursuing enterprise and accountability stories.

Responsibilities

Cover Ohio politics, state government and public policy, including elected officials, state agencies, the General Assembly, courts, campaigns and major statewide issues.

Develop trusted sources inside and outside government and use public records, legislative testimony, campaign finance reports, court records, audits and other primary materials to develop original stories.

Look beyond news releases and mainstream media coverage to identify questions, stories and angles that other outlets are overlooking, particularly those that show how political and policy decisions affect Ohioans.

Develop a clear narrative and approach for stories, considering how each piece builds on previous coverage and fits within the broader landscape of Ohio politics.

Work with editors, reporters and the social media team to strengthen coverage and expand its reach.

Qualifications

Candidates should have excellent writing, reporting and research skills, be comfortable working with primary-source material and adhere to Associated Press style.

Reporters should be curious, skeptical and willing to ask tough questions while approaching subjects fairly.

Candidates should think independently about what constitutes news rather than allowing other media organizations, political parties or government communications offices to set the agenda.

Coverage should tell readers something they did not know, pursue a question others haven’t asked and provide meaningful context no one else provides.

Ohio-based candidates are strongly preferred, particularly those able to regularly report from Columbus and the Statehouse and meet sources in person.

A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, political science or a related field is preferred. Previous experience covering or working with government, politics, courts or public policy is preferred.
